You will have two posts for resting if you need to catch your breath during climbing, you can find a drinks and snack seller on every post, at the second post you will find a post for the Mainer where they normally weight the Sulfur. After the second post you just need to walk another 1.5 hours (approximately) to reach the peak of the crater. Once you reach the peak, you will be amaze by the view, the view of the Mainer, the lake with blue color, the cloud thats feel so close and the smoke came from the Sulfur.

My suggestion is to book a local guide so he will take you to secret spot where you can see sunrise, and they also will take you down to the lake (another 500 metres) to see the famous Blue Fire.

Apart from the beauty of Ijen Crater, there is a sad story of the local mainer who every single day have to walk down to dig the sulfur and walk back up bringing the basket full of Sulfur (it can up to 80 kgs per person). I can’t imagine how hard it is to carry a basket full of sulfur and walking up the crater to weight it. Another thing is the smoke that came from the sulfur, it is really toxic, it make me hard to breath when the smoke hit my face, I had to cover my face with wet clothes so I can go down the lake to see the Blue Fire. All the mainer who work collecting the Sulfur not even wearing any safety precaution or any proper boots.

The sulfur is worth around 1000 rupiah per kg (1 USD is about 13.000 rupiah) it is really not worth of the sweat and risk they took.
